The week of the 'tweener'
Freddy Yak’s tempo was 3:1, he was right in between 27/9 and 24/8. (Ryan Moore was between 27/9 and 30/10) They were both 2:1 in their putting tempo. Similarly Yani Tseng was 3:1 she was in between 21/7 and 24/8. The lesson to be learned here is that you don’t have to be exactly 24/8, you can be 23/8 or 22/7. You just need to be around 3:1 and you need to be consistent. The main...

MED part 2
When we last left off, I was headed to Orlando for the PGA show and the VIP 1 day school. I was discussing MED and measuring. How do those apply to the 1 day? Well, we keep it somewhat short from 9 am to 2 pm. We found that if you go any longer than that, everyone is worn out and the focus is gone (plus everyone starts getting sore). Also, we try to make sure that the golfer is not...

MED
I’m reading ‘THE 4HR BODY’ and author Tim Ferriss brings up many interesting concepts. One that I immediately grabbed on to was the concept of MED: Minimum Effective Dose. Simply defined the MED is the smallest dose that will produce a desired outcome. Anything beyond MED is wasteful. The idea of MED hit me like a ton of bricks. Tim discovered this concept from Arthur Jones,...

The YES mindset (part II of the Hunter Mahan blog)
I had called Johan earlier in the year to get his advice on a mindset for the golf course. We talked about the usual things: process, focus, etc….(which is one reason he likes Tour Tempo because it gets you to focus among many other things)
Anyway, we then talked about the better player and expectations. As you get to a higher level in golf you tend to expect every shot to be perfect....

More from the WGFS - Hunter Mahan's Team
Neale Smith, Craig Davies and Sean Foley are the mental, physical and golf coaches for Hunter Mahan. They spoke about how they team together to help Hunter Mahan. Neale Smith gave a great little talk about mindset on the golf course. He was caddying for Hunter in a 36 hole US Open Qualifier and Hunter had just shot over par and had a bad attitude all day long. So Neale told Hunter, “this...

World Golf Fitness Summit 2010
I just returned from the 2010 World Golf Fitness Summit in Orlando. We launched the PowerTools club there to a huge success and sold out of product. Our original product, the Speedball (aka the XLR8R) also saw much interest. Peter Kostis stopped by the booth and got one and really liked the versatility of it and also the resistance it creates at impact. Peter was one of the keynote...

The 2 Most Powerful Athletes that ever lived...
I’ll give you a small analysis of 2 of the most powerful athletes that have ever lived (pound for pound) and how their ’move’ can help you hit the ball farther. Since the major leagues playoffs are in full force, I’ll start with the pitcher. I’m not a pitching expert. However, I know a powerful motion when I see one and Tim Lincecum of the Giants is the most...

Congrats to Professional Long Driver Mike Carlson!
Mighty Mike just qualified for the Worlds in a very tough Dallas Regional. He hit the longest ball of the day - 356 in the finals. 356 doesn’t seem that long does it? Well, it was into a 20 mph wind and the grid was wet, so it got just a few yards of roll. That’s pretty huge. Look for Mike to make a a name for himself this year in Mesquite!

What you can learn from the Home Run Derby
1. As the batter strides and plants the lead foot, he is still in his ‘backswing’. As the lead foot gets fully planted, then you see the hips really start to go which starts the chain and the rest of the body follows. You need to get that same feeling in your swing, especially if you already come over the top and/or cast and/or lack power. I especially like David Ortiz’ leg...

Part III Plus Coming Attractions
Part of the joy of golf is hitting the ball. I get that. So, I understand you want to get back to the ball. Make your changes away from the ball and then get that same feel while you’re actually hitting the ball. Don’t worry if your first few shots aren’t what you want, you’re developing a new motor pattern and sometimes it takes time to get that to translate to the...

How to Improve Part II
Trying to improve your swing while hitting balls it a little like trying to improve your weightlifting technique on a ‘max’ rep. It ain’t gonna happen because your body has one goal in mind: move the weight. (in golf, it’s hit the ball) So what do weightlifters/powerlifters do to improve technique? They use lighter weights so that is NOT the focus. They have to focus...
How to Improve Part I
If you’ve been on our forum, you’ve seen some good questions. One came in the other day that was really good:
I was wondering if you can tell me why there is an abbreviated follow through when the Y and L drills are performed? What purpose does this serve, and why wouldn’t you just finish the swing to the top of the back swing like you would on a full swing? Thanks! Here was...

6 feet & 165 lbs. and hitting it 432?!!
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Junior, you finally hit the big time and you’re hitting it 432?!”….
No, that’s not me that’s under 170 and bombing it. It’s LD phenom Jamie Sadlowski.
Are you kidding me? Under 170 LB’s and consistently hitting it over 4 bills?...

Lose the Weight Part Deux
I’ve received quite a few responses to the last youtube video I posted.
Here is the latest one:
Fascinating stuff. This bears out something that happened to me a few months ago at the range. I was trying to alternate between swinging a weighted club then switching to driver in the same way as on the video thinking the relative lightness would increase clubhead speed. I found I...

Into the Real World
I finally took my 5 months of indoor training to the real world: the outdoors, with a real club and ball. I set up the FlightScope, got out all of my toys and hit some drives. My clubhead speed was good: in the low to mid 130’s on the Flightscope, but my ball speeds weren’t so good. I’m not worried, I haven’t hit a ball hard for almost 6 months, so I’ve got time to...
