Last night we flipped to Playing Lessons on The Golf Channel.   They had a copy of TOUR TEMPO on the table.  We don’t know if they were going over the featured guest, J.B. Holmes’...

Ask Jr
Hi John, Thank you for all of your hard work and great research, you are certainly helping golfers and teachers everywhere! Quick question: As far as tempo for short game it is my understanding that you have found a 2-1 ratio in putting, chipping, pitching and bunkers. Is this correct?  At what point to you see the ratios go to 3-1 like the full swing?   Thank you for your time, Paul...

Mike Carlson
I met Mike Carlson in the summer of 2008, he was interested in competing in Long drive and having me coach him along the way.  Normally, I tell people, I can teach you to hit farther, but long drive is a completely different ballgame.  Mike had what it takes for long drive and I predict big things for him in 2009. I interviewed “Mighty” Mike Carlson about his experience at the 2008 REMAX WLDC in...

Dear Mr. President
Congratulations! You’re going to receive a lot of advice over the course of your administration.  Due to all of the crises you will have to deal with, you won’t have much time to work on your golf game.  So you (like the country) need fast results while being efficient as possible with your time! So I am going to bail out your golf game and it won’t cost billions of dollars....

Ask Jr
John: On the Y and L swing drills as mentioned on your website and hopefully info will come with my Tour Tempo about them, but do you stop at the 9 o clock position during the backswing and pause for a second or two before beginning the downswing or do you simply take the club back to that position and then immediately begin the downswing. Also, just curious what type of speeds you can...

Ask Jr
Jr, should I swing a heavy club? I’m getting a lot of questions on swinging a heavy club.  Here is my answer: http://www.mytpi.com/mytpi05/TPI3D/article.asp?id=471 If you don’t have time to read it, the simple answer is “no”, don’t use a weighted club.   Please feel free to email me with any questions you have: jr(at)tourtempo.com

I didn't plan this but.....the NY Times was right.
Gary’s first drive was 333 (longest drive so far), basically drove the green then got up and down for birdie.  This is pretty much what the NY Times article was telling us.  You’re better off bombing it like a tour pro and then having plenty of shots to get up and down VS. hitting it 210 off the tee in the rough and then getting near the green and having to get up and down for par or...

Gary Woodland's PGA Debut →
Woodland’s starting his PGA tour career right with a birdie on the first hole.  Can’t wait to see his Trackman #’s/Driving Distance.  My prediction is 130 mph for club and 192 for ball speed.  Hitting it about 360 yards total.  I guess the distance is a little more dictated by the conditions, but we’ll see.

Click on the link above to read an interesting article on Raul Ibanez’s training. The key to improving anything in life is to be open minded to new ideas. I love Raul’s attitude and that’s why he is still playing even @ 37 yrs old. Stay open minded, be willing to try things, but at the same time be critical of what comes your way. If it works, use it, if it doesn’t get rid...

NY Times Article shatters more "TRUTH's" of Golf →
Check the link above.  If you remember when I first started this blog, you’ll recall that I’m trying to tell you things that aren’t so obvious.  I’m always questioning the way we do things and the “why” we do things.  The concept of Tour Tempo defies what we’ve held as a golf “truth”: swing it LOW and SLOW.   Well, we know the low and slow is...

Nick Faldo discovers Tour Tempo (sort of) →
Click on the link above to see in the latest issue of T&L Golf, where Nick Faldo writes a great article on NOT swinging slow to maintain good rhythm.  In the article, he basically agrees with Tour Tempo and references the Greg Norman example my dad used in the book.  The only problem is that he forgot to mention Tour Tempo! He adds a great line at the end how the better a tour player is...

TOUR TEMPO® - As an avid golfer and inventor, John Novosel studied films of the PGA greats, searching, along with countless others over the last century, for the key to what made certain golfers’ swings so effortless, artful, and effective. Viewing the films, Novosel made a startling discovery. Nearly every champion demonstrated identical timing in their swings. An extensive review of...

New Year's Resolution #4
“I will warm up/practice/play with a purpose” aka “I will NEVER just beat balls” In case you missed it, Hank Haney is doing a reality show with Charles Barkley on the Golf Channel.  Here is a picture of Charles during one of his sessions, where he hits 800 (or more) golf balls in one day.  http://twitpic.com/y5up Charles definitely needs all the help he can get, however, we need to be smart in...

New Year’s Resolution #3
“I will always warm up my swing/mechanics before a round of golf” We’re going to warm up with tempo, warm up the body, now let’s warm up our mechanics and our swing. You might be asking me, “when I hit balls, isn’t that what I’m doing?”. Well, yes and no. Yes you’re warming up your swing, but if your warm up is all slices, then your warming up the slice. So, no, you’re not warming up. The...

New Year’s Resolution #2 →
“I will always warm up my body before a round of golf” OK, so you now know that you MUST warm up with Tour Tempo, and as a Tour Tempo afficionado, you know HOW to do that.  The next resolution you need to make is warming up your body.  Done.  You’re in, great.  The question is HOW?? One of the great things I’ve learned from Long Drive is that NO ONE tries to hit a ball 400 yards without warming...

New Year’s Resolution #1
“I will always warm up with Tour Tempo before a round” In the last couple of years I haven’t played a lot of golf.  There are many reasons including a 2 year old named Chloe.  However, in the last few months, I’ve been able to get out to the course to actually play golf.  I took my long drive warm up routine and tailored it to warming up for 9 holes instead of warming up for LD (more on the warm...
